The Reggio Emilia Approach

dates back to post-war Italy, in the northern region of Reggio Emilia.  The people of Reggio Emilia came together to develop a meaningful way to educate their children, and to create a better future for their community. The Reggio Emilia Approach to learning engages children in questions that they develop and investigate. Just like the community of Reggio Emilia, the image of the child as a capable, curious and creative learner is at the heart of all we do at Richland Academy

Mrs. Daniel has been teaching at Richland Academy for over 12 years. We are so grateful to have such a knowledgable and passionate educator co-learning with our students. Our school is a better place because she is here!
Mrs. Daniel says that Senior Kindergarten is about developing a growth mindset - to understand that the more we practise and put effort into what we are doing the more successful we will be - whether it be painting a picture of an amaryllis, building an imaginary city, writing a story or reading a book. We put a lot of emphasis on developing strategies to solve problems (social/emotional/cognitive) and developing a work ethic where working hard and persevering is very much encouraged and celebrated.
One of SKs favourite terms is "being a risk taker" - which to the SKs means taking on a challenge, trying new things, making a mistake, dusting ourselves off, and getting straight back up again!
Learning how to collaborate, negotiate, problem solve and have a creative mindset, plus a strong ecological identity, are skills we hope to develop in SK to prepare our children for an ever-changing world.
