“To understand is to invent” (Piaget) – Part 1

Time spent ‘tinkering’ with materials allows the children to explore the many possibilities of materials, to invent and ultimately innovate. It is a safe place to experience failure, develop focus and persistence, and then to problem solve.“Each time one prematurely teaches a child something he could have discovered himself, the child is kept from inventing it and consequently from understanding it completely.” (Piaget)

Time has been spent ‘tinkering’ with materials since September. enabling the children to learn about the physical properties of these objects. Moving forward, the children have now been challenged to apply this knowledge and to invent a puppet theatre, from recycled materials, in collaboration with others. This week the children will begin planning their designs.
