#EveryChildMatters
Our school week in Grade 5 was given the title of ‘Orange Shirt Week‘ to honour the 215 children who lost their lives at a Residential school in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation in western Canada. Students and teachers wore Orange Shirts to show their support.
Our Fives have a strong understanding of Residential schooling, systemic racism and inter-generational trauma from inquiry that took place during our unit on Indigenous Peoples. They authentically shared their grief and sadness and also highlighted the importance of raising awareness about these dark moments of Canada’s past (proud teacher moment).
We also made links to our new unit on energy access by watching videos and asking questions about ‘energy poverty’ that exists in more than 200 remote First Nations communities throughout Canada.
