In SK we follow a Reggio inspired IB curriculum. Part of that means that there are opportunities to include an emergent curriculum as we respect and honour the children’s interests. Emergent curriculum is a way of planning lessons that are based on children’s interests and passions at a certain point in time. Children thrive and learn best when their interests are captured so learning occurs more naturally.
With Halloween, there was much talk of ghosts and monsters. What better way to overcome any fears, than by creating your own monster? At home monsters were created from different materials, as wonderful and unique as the creators themselves!
Once returned to school they provided a wonderful opportunity for sharing with friends, writing about in writing journals and counting and recognising the 2D and 3D shapes they were made of. A wonderful cross curricular learning experience that came from the children’s very own ideas.
