Understanding Media Literacy

Our Grade 4 classroom began their year-long journey to become literate in the ways that the media sends us messages and shapes our communities. They started by questioning “What is Media Literacy?”

They brainstormed their initial impressions and came up with a definition to start their learning: “Media is anything written or talked about” and it has to do with advertisements and passing on messages.

They used their definition to analyze how the covers of books are designed in order to send a message, and talked about the different messages that book jackets convey. They compared Plain Kate by Erin Bow and Storm Front by Jim Butcher.
