SK’s Explore Fractions

Connecting their prior knowledge of symmetry, our SK students have a good understanding of “whole,” ‘half’ and “equal pieces.”  This week, they have been working on the concept of quarters and thirds.

Through the media of paint and play dough, the audio, visual and tactile learners within the classroom were able to explore the mathematical concept of fractions. Vismay was fascinated to discover that some letters could also be divided into half, and “are symmetrical.”  Many tested their theories by placing one half on top of another, to check that they were the same size.
