Signs of Life – Nurturing Seeds in SK

The many classrooms of Richland Academy are currently involved in planting and nurturing seeds for our school gardens.  One child in SK is particularly taken by this, and every morning immediately seeks out any changes to the seeds we have collectively sown.  Today was the thrill of discovering that the first sunflower seed had sprouted. She is also drawn to the fading tulips. She noticed, “The black thing.  Does it have any pollen?” she wondered. “I think the green from leaves goes down into the bulb to feed it”, she shared.I am struck by her delight in the growth of the seedlings, her need to make sense of what is happening, and the gentle nurturing she gives to another living thing. She takes on the responsibility of watering the plants without reminders, and remembers in great detail all the ‘does and don’t’ of looking after plants. I am fascinated by her questions and hypotheses, and wonder where they will lead her and others over the coming weeks…
