Central Idea: Earth’s resources are an important part of our life.
Our Grade 4 / 5 Class has officially launched into our third International Baccalaureate (IB) Inquiry about how the world works. This work is connected to the Ontario Science Curriculum and linked to the topic of rocks and minerals. We are exploring the theme Earth’s resources are an important part of our life. This for me, is always such an exciting unit of study because it connects so deeply to the Reggio Emilia inspired principle of the image of the child; that of the child as an active participant of their learning and offers fun and creative opportunities for hands on learning.
The three lines of Inquiry for this Inquiry are:
- Earths’ resources have unique characteristics and properties
- The properties of earth’s resources determine possible uses for them
- Our use of Earth’s resources affects the environment
We are currently focused on the first line, and have been exploring through the process of the Scientific Method the characteristics and properties of a mineral called Halite. I encourage you to ask your child about this mineral and its uses. Next week, students will be bringing home their new IB Folder to share their science knowledge pertaining to this topic.
