Constructing Simple Machines as Set Design in Grade 2

The Grade 2 students were thoroughly engaged on their field study to the Ontario Science Centre to investigate simple machines.  When they returned to school, they were immediately inspired to use their new knowledge of simple machines to create props for their year-end production of Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’.Their ideas to create the props:

  • “Build a castle or kingdom out of cardboard boxes.” A.K.
  • “Build a boat for the shipwreck scene.” C.B.
  • “Create a switch or pulley system for the ship to fall apart.”- S.D.
  • “Create a lever or a pulley for the lightning and water to come down.” A.H.
These authentic connections have solidified the students’ understanding of simple machinery, and they have applied their learning to their prop design and construction. We’re confident you’ll agree that the Grade 2 production of William Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’, was a tremendous success!
