Bringing Like-minded Spirits Together through the Hawkins Exhibit

Please enjoy this reflective post from Richland’s Head of School, Mrs. Marlina Oliveira, on her rich and engaging experience of the Hawkins Exhibit opening and conference held recently at Richland Academy.

A week following the official Canadian opening of the Hawkins Exhibit, Cultivating the Scientist in Every Child:  The Philosophy of Frances and David Hawkins, I am still relishing the ‘high’ from this spectacular event.

Despite the high winds and rain outdoors, inside the school was a buzz of vibrant energy, dialogue, curiosity and passion, as 100 educators from across Canada and the United States came together to celebrate and honour the work of Frances and David Hawkins and to participate in the Messing About in Science workshops.Although the focus of the weekend was to engage in the work of these two brilliant people, the meeting of the minds and hearts of the people present was more than we had ever anticipated.  Collaboration, relationships and connections for the purpose of building a culture of inquiry in our schools, are what resonated and enriched that weekend’s experience. Kevin Honeycutt explains that “relationships matter more than the curriculum.  Put teachers with people they care about, let them freely share and magical things will happen.”

It is through the building of these relationships that we will collectively transform the education system in our province, our nation and our continent.

Thank you to all those who attended the Hawkins Exhibit and for the magic.
