Richland Academy has a long standing relationship with the charity Meagan’s Walk, supporting paediatric brain tumour research, and last week we were fortunate enough to attend a Crane Ceremony at The Hospital for Sick Children to launch this year’s Walk. The audience included families of children with brain tumours, internationally celebrated Paediatric Oncologists, and students from around the GTA.
In celebration of Earth Month, we welcomed Earth Rangers and their Animal Ambassadors for a special ‘Bring Back the Wild’ presentation on April 2, in collaboration with the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The Eco-Assembly focused on issues related to biodiversity, and the importance of protecting animals and their habitats. In the presentation, four species and their habitats at-risk were introduced: the Spotted Turtle in Ontario, the Plains Bison in Saskatchewan, the Pine Marten in Newfoundland, and the Monarch Butterfly in Manitoba.
This holiday season, the Richland community is helping to make a difference!
We recently participated in the Out-of-the-Cold drive, where we collected gently used coats, scarves, winter hats, mitts, boots and snow-pants under our ‘Giving Tree’ for local Richmond Hill families. We are also supporting the Family Giving Program, ‘Holiday Heroes,’ where each school division is collecting new donations to support 3 York Region families. These projects are an extension of Richland’s ongoing commitment to community service.
In celebration of World Kindness Week, Richland Ambassadors hosted a ‘Fundraiser for Haiti’ event. As part of the Fundraiser, students took orders for Me to We Artisans jewellery, a line of original accessories handcrafted by artisans in Free The Children countries across the globe, as well as customized, ethically-produced Me to We Style t-shirts and scarves that express our commitment toward Free The Children initiatives.
With the generous support of our Richland Community, we raised $560 towards our $8,000 goal of Adopting-a-Village in Haiti. With the environmental impact of our Me to We Style order, we saved 3.96 lbs. of pesticide and 12 trees were planted on our behalf.
