An Important Message on Anti-Racism

Dear Richland Community,

Richland Academy stands for equality and against racial injustice of any kind. The recent tragic and senseless killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Sean Reed, Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade show the profound importance of the Black Lives Matter movement. We are appalled and saddened, by the racist acts and violence in Canada and around the world and we wish to extend our condolences to all those who are suffering, in particular communities of colour.
We encourage our community to use this time to reflect and engage in conversations around fighting anti-black racism.  We all have the responsibility to do everything we can to ensure each member of our community feels that they can be who they are and that they belong.
As a mission-driven school that aims to inspire our students to be deeper thinking, confident and world ready; teachers and staff are always committed to ongoing open and honest learning conversations with students and each other in breaking down barriers and eliminating discrimination and bias. We are deeply committed to supporting all of our community members, and creating a safe, respectful, inclusive and equitable space for learning and working.
We know we have more work to do and we will continue on our mission of engagement, action and bringing about meaningful change. We have compiled a collection of age-appropriate resources, and these will support parents in speaking with your children and each other about race and racism.

An important message from Ms. Omua and Ms. Modeste
It might be hard to see beauty in the world right now due to the exposure of unkindness and injustice. Please do not be overwhelmed or disengaged from this season. Rather, let it lead you to reflect deeply, to listen, to research, to have family discussions, to unlearn old ways and learn new things.

“The answers to the challenges of our world are buried deep within us.” – Sam Adeyemi
We are the solution. Let us inspire love, compassion, respect, kindness and value for all, always.
