Stitch by Stitch: Learning to use a sewing machine!

In Design class, our Grade 7 and 8 students started learning how to use a sewing machine. For many students, this was their first time ever using one. At first, they were a bit nervous, but also very excited to try something new!

We began by learning the different parts of the sewing machine. Students practiced how to thread the needle, wind the bobbin, and safely turn the machine on and off. Then, they tried sewing straight lines on extra fabric. It was a collaborative effort as hey helped each other, asked questions, and practiced until they got the hang of it.

Sewing is a great skill. It helps students learn how things are made, how to fix them, and how to make their own designs. It also teaches patience, focus, and problem-solving.

Next they will begin planning their last classes on each step of creating their projects. Stay tuned to see their progress and final designs!
