Flipping Our Classroom

Richland Academy’s Faculty are committed to delivering the curriculum in such a way that students are curious and engaged.  Today’s Inquiring Minds post comes from Richland’s Grade 5/6 teacher, Ms. Bei, who has been piloting the flipped classroom with her students.

This year, Ms. Bei and the Grade 6’s are flipping traditional methods of teaching to allow for more active, collaborative and authentic learning. In the flipped classroom, teachers create and curate videos on classroom topics for students to watch at home. By receiving direct instruction through interactive technology at home, time in the classroom is focused on discussing, questioning, collaborating and getting one-on-one support.

Through this model, students become active learners who meet challenges with the guidance and support of their teachers and peers. In addition, teachers are able to assess the students learning as it happens and adjust their teaching to enhance learning. This model supports Richland’s Reggio-inspired mandate by positioning the teacher and student as co-learners within the classroom. Furthermore, students are given more time in the class for deep inquiries and authentic learning opportunities.
